Key Project Showcase: Holiday Inn Express, Courtenay

Edgett Excavating proudly announces the successful launch of the Holiday Inn Express on Hunt Road in Courtenay.

This project was successful because of the strong team working to over come the complex challenges that came with this project. As a subcontractor to Sargent Construction, we self-performed the civil scope of this hotel development project, which included site grading, a new domestic water and fire protection water service, sanitary sewer and storm drainage. We worked with Osprey Electric on the installation of underground, concrete encased BC Hydro ducts. We worked with Tayco Paving for on and off-site asphalt paving, sidewalks enhancements, curbs, and gutters.

Challenge and Solution

Monday February 1, 2021, City of Courtenay council approved second reading of a rezoning application for the four-storey, 93-unit hotel. The application included a Green Engage, a monitoring and management tool that tracks energy, carbon and water usage. Edgett Excavating began pricing and preparing for this project in March 2021 and after several design changes we got to work in Winter 2021.

Environmental Safeguarding

We were immediately faced with highly saturated work site. Our pre-planned strategies allowed us to swiftly and effectively address this issue. Our team’s expertise in implementing stringent erosion and sediment controls ensured that despite the difficult terrain and close proximity to sensitive ecological areas, including a fish-bearing creek and local farmland, we maintained the highest standards of environmental care while completing our work.

Outcome

We are proud to have played a part in the additional of another much-anticipated amenity for the Comox Valley. Thank you to the Metropolitan Group and Sargent Construction for letting us contribute to a beautiful parking lot with lots of charging stations.
